On Beginnings

Hello and welcome. This will be the first blog post I make public, so apologies in advance if it comes off stiff, I’m still figuring everything out. My goal here is to give monthly musings/updates/progress as it relates to my writing career. This will also be a crosspost from my personal journal, and separate from my quarterly updates in my newsletter. Some ground rules, in my personal journal I typically write about my life, the present, and some other third thing. Again, here my goal is to be a bit more focused on the writing aspect of my life, but with how consuming it is I’m sure some other stuff will slip through haha. My goal is to never monetize or run ads or sell anything like that on here, so if you’re just looking for the rambling of a fledgling author you are in the right place lol. I will surely endorse stuff or talk about other media to be clear, but it will never be because I received money or at least not without being completely transparent. Again, I hate ads in the middle of personal chats, so I’m gonna keep this as ‘real’ as humanly possible. I will also use this as a spot to respond to any interesting feedback I receive, so send it my way.

On Debuts

In terms of updates, my debut novel, Crimson Copper Bluebird, is well on its way for a Fall 2026 release. I thought the writing was the hardest part until I got to everything after hahaha. To be completely transparent I am so ready to write the next one! All the little steps from finished manuscript to published book can feel a bit overwhelming at times. Thankfully I have wonderful friends and collaborators to drag me kicking and screaming across the finish line. A bit behind the scenes, my long term goal is to come out with at minimum seven books, and then to evaluate next steps from there. I’m a bit nervous about getting pigeonholed into a single genre, but I think fantasy is a good base for me. At least it is what I am most interested in writing about.

On Timelines

I guess it is worth laying out the timeline that it took me to get here. I’d say I’d had the idea for Crimson Copper Bluebird a bit over a decade ago, along with several other book ideas. I’m sure I will get into inspirations in later posts but suffice to say all my book ideas start out as weird dreams. All of them sat at around 10 to 50 pages written each, with me only incrementing about 10 pages a year or slowly adding outlines. After grad school (2021) I focused on getting licensed (2023) because I wanted to make sure my career was stable so I could support myself. It was 2024 that I finally felt ready, and so I picked what I believed was the most fleshed out idea and then built it out into what is now Crimson Copper Bluebird. My goal was to write about 10 pages a week until the story was complete, and then cut 500 words a week until I had under 120k words, and then read through and edit around seven times. I ended up formally finishing all re-writes and edits in April of this year, so now the last couple months have only been focused on getting it out there. I have so many fun facts or weird tangential stuff I want to share, but it’ll have to be saved for the future.
